Artist's Statement

My love of the natural world stems from my childhood on a Warwickshire farm.

I have worked as an Art Teacher in Trinidad, Tanzania, Suffolk and Haslemere. Over the years I have exhibited widely, both here and overseas.

My paintings have been hung at the RA Summer Exhibition, and the National Print Exhibition.

I am an exploratory figurative artist. Draughtsmanship is my strength. I use it in my attempts to capture the poetry in plants. The quality of line is important to me. Also, the secret world that can be discovered with a simple magnifying glass.

I always draw from life. While at W.S.C.A.D., as a mature student I started drawing heads, spending up to six hours on a detailed, larger than life portrait. These became paintings and etchings.

Etching and watercolour give me the control I want to develop my drawings into finished works. Recently I have become, interested in trees and experimenting with ways of depicting landscapes.
